About Aaron Skobel

Mission Valley, CA

Hello, my name is Aaron, and thank you for being here today. I am a Clinical Therapist based in Mission Valley, California. I have been fortunate to have spent the last 20 years working in the social work and mental health field, along with living in different parts of America, and also in London, England. Within these different parts of the world, I have spent most of my career working in the child welfare system with children and families who have been a part of the foster care and adoption system. I have also spent time working in outpatient therapy clinics, residential treatment centers and intensive outpatient services; where I specialized in working with clients who had mental health, trauma, substance use and eating disorders.

I have a therapeutic style that involves bringing a gentle, kind and accepting approach to all individuals. While using this approach, I am also being mindful of creating a safe and supportive space for clients to explore their thoughts and feelings. This safe space is created with the hope that clients can be encouraged to be honest and vulnerable with what they are going through, and can look forward to our sessions together. As clients begin to dive deep into their therapeutic journey, my wish is for them to experience a deep sense of healing, and to come to an understanding of who they are and what they have gone through.

If you feel we might be a good fit and if this is a style that may work for you, please feel free to get in touch and book a free consultation. I would be delighted to sit down with you, listen to your story, and help you to find some healing within it.

  • Clinical Experience

When I was completing my masters degree program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, I completed an internship at Aurora Behavioral Health Care in which I had the privilege to train with an experienced licensed clinician. During this time, I was provided with a unique opportunity to shadow this therapist, which meant I sat in the same room with him and the clients he did therapy with. I was able to observe and shadow how he ran sessions with clients, how to take notes, and how to develop and ask the right therapeutic questions. Over time I was provided the opportunity to run sessions with clients while this therapist sat in the room with myself and observed and supported me through this process. This experience is what helped lay the foundation of how I learned how to do clinical therapy.

During this time, this is where I developed a passion for wanting to become a Therapist. Developing long term connections, creating deep and meaningful experiences, and seeing others heal and feel better has motivated me to want to be the best therapist I can become. As many of us have experienced various traumas, heartbreak, and other difficulties throughout our life, I too have gone through my own personal trials. Going through my own healing process and having the opportunity to pass on to others what I have learned is a privilege and an honor, and with my utmost sincerity, I am grateful to do this work and to help others find healing within themselves.

My Mission for Your Mental Health

My mission is to help others to learn how to turn towards their pain and brokenness, instead of running away from it. This type of therapy is done by teaching others how to sit with difficult emotions, even those really tricky ones. It is important to learn how to sit with difficult emotions because once we can learn to sit with them, we can then begin to process them and heal through them. When healing is taking place, we can then start to make peace with the past, let go of it, and bring joy in to the present. As this is happening, we can then begin to turn slowly and gently towards the future and we can start to feel whole again. When we begin to fully heal, we will develop a deeper and more meaningful connection with ourselves and others, and we start to feel alive again. As a result of this, we find a greater understanding, empathy, and self-awareness within ourselves and others around us.

My Journey

My journey as a Psychotherapist started when I was in my 20's. I was working with families in the field of social work, and during this time I was working with numerous therapists. When I was working with them, I quickly realized they had a certain level of emotional insight with the families I was helping, and it very much intrigued me. I knew at this time my own insight was quite limited, but it was something I wanted to understand better and develop more of. Because of this, I knew I had to take certain steps in my own life, both personally and professionally in order to get there. As many people have gone through their own personal traumas and difficulties, I also have gone through my own, and I knew it was time for me to start my journey.

Over the years as I began to find healing within my own personal journey, I found that professionally I was able to support others in a new way by developing deeper and more meaningful connections. I learned how to sit and hold space with all types of individuals, listen to their stories, and be fully present with everything they were going through. I then realized this started to become some of the most beautiful work I could offer to others. With that being said, I feel honored and privileged to be a psychotherapist, and I say this with the deepest gratitude in which one can have. Thank you for allowing me to be here for you.
